Hui ink is the most famous type of traditional Chinese ink. It is named after Huizhou Prefecture, where it is mainly produced. It is one of the four treasures of the well-known study.
Hui ink originated in the late Tang Dynasty. During the war, a large number of good craftsmen went south to avoid disaster. Xi Chao and his son, master ink makers in Yizhou, settled in Shezhou. The two used the raw materials of pine trees, a specialty in southern Anhui, to improve the process and finally made good ink. His son Tinggui was appreciated by Li Yu, the empress of the Southern Tang Dynasty, and was given the surname Li. Since then, Li Tinggui has become the master of ink making, and the Hui ink he made has been extremely rare in the Song Dynasty, and it is called "Xin'an fragrant ink". Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty treasured Li Tinggui's ink in the Moyun Room, which is now preserved in the National Palace Museum in Taipei.
