Solar Cycle Progression
The Sun operates on an 11-year solar cycle. This cycle, known as the solar cycle, involves changes in the Sun's magnetic field, leading to varying levels of solar activity, including sunspots, solar flares, and coronal mass ejections (CMEs).
We are currently in Solar Cycle 25, which began in December 2019. The peak of this cycle, called the solar maximum, is expected around 2025. During the solar maximum, we see the highest number of sunspots and CMEs, as well as increased solar activity overall.
CMEs can occur throughout the solar cycle, but they are more frequent and intense during the solar maximum due to the increased number of sunspots, which are regions of intense magnetic activity. The cycle alternates between solar minimum (low activity) and solar maximum (high activity) approximately every 11 years.
