《莊子·齊物論》中説，有一天，莊周在草地上睡覺，做了一個夢。他在睡夢中覺得自己變成了一隻蝴蝶，蝴蝶在空中翩翩然飛舞着，四處遊蕩，快樂得忘記了自己本來的樣子，也忘了自己是由莊周變化而成的。過了一會兒，莊周忽然醒了過來，但是夢境還清晰地印在他的腦海裏。他起身看了看自己，又想了想夢中的事情，一時間有些迷惘。他竟然弄不清自己到底是莊周還是蝴蝶了。究竟是他在自己的夢中變成了蝴蝶，還是蝴蝶在它的夢中變成了莊周？竟然分不清哪一個是真的。這件事讓莊周很有感觸，他覺得，有時人生中的夢境和真實的生活是很難區分開的。夢境有時會給人一種真實的感受，而在真實的生活中也會讓人有身在夢中的感覺。莊周認為，世間萬物就是這樣不斷變化着的，人生也是這樣不停變幻着的，沒有什麼是永恆不變的。
